Sister Mary

Sister Mary Sullivan, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 69 years, died Feb. 24 after a long illness. She was 87.

She met the Dominican Sisters at her home parish of St. Luke in Whitestone.

After graduating from Immaculata H.S., she entered the novitiate in 1948. One year later, she received the Dominican habit and the religious name, Sister James Margaret. She pronounced final vows on Aug. 5, 1950.

She taught at St. Elizabeth School, Ozone Park, 1950-53; St. Agnes, Rockville Centre; St. Clement, South Ozone Park; St. Patrick, Bay Ridge; and St. Pancras, Glendale.

She received a bachelor and masters in English Literature at St. John’s University and in 1969 she began teaching at St. Agnes Academic H.S., College Point. She also served at the diocesan Office of Education, as librarian at Holy Child School, Richmond Hill, and was, for many years, a resource specialist at St. Gregory the Great School, Bellerose.

In 2002, ill health necessitated a move to Queen of the Rosary Motherhouse in Amityville where she remained until her death.

Burial was in the Sisters’ cemetery.
