Sister Mary Raymond Keane, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 71 years, died June 2 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.
She entered the congregation in 1946 from St. Gregory the Great in Crown Heights, after attending her parish school and then Bishop McDonnell H.S., also Crown Heights. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, followed by a master’s in education and counseling from Manhattan College.
She taught in St. James, Downtown Brooklyn, 1948-51; Holy Name, Park Slope, 1951-53; Nativity of Our Blessed Lord, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1953; St. John the Evangelist, Park Slope, 1953-54; St. Anthony, Greenpoint, 1954-58; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Astoria, 1958-60; and Visitation, Red Hook, 1960-64.
In 1964, she began teaching on the high school level at her alma mater, Bishop McDonnell H.S., where she stayed until 1968. She later taught at St. Joseph H.S., Downtown Brooklyn, 1968-69; Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 1972-76; and Stella Maris H.S., Rockaway Park, 1976-82.
She served as principal of St. Joseph, Pacific St., Prospect Heights, 1969-72.
In 1982, she responded to the need she saw in Appalachia and began ministering at David School, Ky., 1982-83; St. Therese parish, Dante, Va., 1983-2001; Prince of Peace, Grantsville, W.Va., 2001-06, and Holy Redeemer, Spencer, W.Va., 2001-06. She retired in 2006.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Sacred Heart Chapel, Brentwood, June 5. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
