Sister Mary John O’Rourke, O.S.U.

srmaryjohnSister Mary John O’Rourke, O.S.U., died May 22 at St. Ursula Center, Blue Point, L.I. She was 78.

A native of Ozone Park, she entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk in 1954 and professed her final vows six years later.

She graduated from St. John’s University, Jamaica, and earned a master’s in history from St. Joseph’s College, West Hartford, Conn., and a Certificate in Theology from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkley, Calif.

Locally, she taught at Our Lady of Grace School, Howard Beach; and Nativity B.V.M., Ozone Park.

She was a leader in the Bridgeport Diocese curriculum mapping process and technology initiatives. She led the entire school community to earn the distinction of being a 2010-2011 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education.

She is survived by her sister Patricia Kingsley.

Burial was at the cemetery of the Ursuline Sisters in Blue Point.
