Sister Mary Florence McCarthy, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 58 years, died Jan. 23.

She entered the congregation in 1957 from St. Joachim parish, Cedarhurst, L.I. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Brentwood College in Brentwood, and from Fordham University, respectively.

Formerly known as Sister St. Joachim, she taught in the Brooklyn Diocese at Transfiguration, Williamsburg, 1960-62; St. Michael, Sunset Park, 1962-64; Holy Family, Flushing, 1964-66; St. Rita, Long Island City, 1966-69; St. Teresa of Avila, Prospect Heights, 1969-70; Immaculate Heart of Mary, Kensington, 1970-72; and Our Lady of Angels, Bay Ridge, 1973-77. She also served as librarian at St. Leo, Corona, 2004.

In the Rockville Centre Diocese, she taught at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Wyandanch, L.I., 1977-91, and SS. Cyril & Methodius, Deer Park, L.I., 1972-73.

She served at Hope House Ministries, Port Jefferson, L.I., 1991-95; in grief counseling, Moriches, L.I., 1995-97; as pastoral associate at St. Frances Cabrini, Coram, L.I., 1997; and director of St. Joseph Renewal Center, Brentwood, 1997-2002.

She was the librarian at Sacred Heart School, North Merrick, L.I., 2002-04, and was a volunteer at St. Patrick, Glen Cove, L.I., 2006.

Her ministry in education was intermingled with membership on various councils, founding an ambulance corporation and active engagement in community affairs. She retired in 2014.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
