Sister Mary Edward

Sister Mary Edward McGuiness, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 84 years, died Oct. 28. She was 103.

Baptized   Marguerite, she entered the congregation in 1934 from Our Lady of Sorrows parish, Corona, and received the name Mary Edward. She earned her bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from St. John’s University and a master’s in business administration from Hunter College.

She taught at Nativity of Our Blessed Lord, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1936-40; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Long Island City, 1940-42, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park, 1942-46.

She served in the clerical offices of St. Joseph College, Clinton Hill, 1946-55, before returning to teaching at St. Joseph H.S., Downtown Brooklyn, 1955-58.

She went on to serve at St. John ’s Hospital, Queens, and the finance office in the administration building of the motherhouse, Brentwood. She retired to Maria Regina Residence in 2004.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Maria Regina Chapel, Nov. 2. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
