Sister Mary Cecilia Giannitti, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 72 years, died March 23 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.

She entered the congregation in 1944 from the parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Patchogue, L.I.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in music education in New York University (NYU); certification in Gregorian Chant from the Gregorian Institute of America; a master’s in education from NYU and a master’s in administration/leadership from St. John’s University, Jamaica.

She conducted workshops, composed curriculum guides for music education and gave presentations in different learning styles. Her outstanding creativity in music resulted in such musical productions as the 100th Centennial Celebration for the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1956 and “The Enchanted Dart,” which followed.

She taught at St. Angela Hall Academy, Clinton Hill, 1946-49; Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 1949-64; Brentwood College, Brentwood, 1964-66; Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, 1966-70; Woodward School, Woodbury, L.I., 1970-72; and Our Lady of Lourdes, West Islip, L.I., 1972-74.

She completed a fellowship at St. John’s University, 1974-77, before becoming principal of Sacred Heart Seminary, Hempstead, L.I., 1977-93, and a professor at St. John’s University, 1993-97.

In 1997, she became involved in senior enrichment in the Town of Hempstead Centers, Hempstead, until she retired in 2009.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Sacred Heart Chapel, Brentwood, April 1.

Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery there.
