Sister Marilyn

Sister Marilyn Kennedy, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 70 years, died Nov. 16 in St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage.

She was born in Brooklyn and attended the Academy of St. Joseph and then St. Joseph H.S. She entered the congregation in 1948 from Holy Cross parish, Flatbush.

She earned a bachelor’s in business education from St. John’s University, Jamaica; in administration from Fordham University; in elementary guidance from Manhattan College; a master’s in counseling psychology from Manhattan College.

She earned permanent certifications in district administration; administration/ supervision and nursery, kindergarten, grades one through six and guidance.

Formerly Sister Mary Leonard, she taught at St. Mary Mother of Jesus, Bensonhurst, 1950-51; Transfiguration in Williamsburg, 1951-54; St. Stanislas Kostka, Maspeth, 1954-60; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Williamsburg, 1960-64; St. Malachy, East New York, 1964-68; Academy of St. Joseph, Brentwood, 1968-71; and St. Anthony of Padua, Greenpoint, 1971-73.

She served at both Our Lady of the Snows, North Floral Park, and St. Clare, Rosedale, from 1973 to 1977; and then continued at Our Lady of the Snows, 1977-81.

She was principal of Mary’s Nativity, Flushing, 1981-88, and was engaged in a counseling ministry at St. Anthony’s H.S., South Huntington, 1993-2004.

Her ministry was widespread, ranging education to drug abuse prevention to pastoral ministry and advanced catechist development.

She belonged to the N.Y.S. School Counselor Association, 1973-2004, and served on the CSJ Administrators Association Board, 1981-88.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place in Maria Regina Chapel, Brentwood. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
