Sister Margretta

Sister Margretta Driscoll, R.S.M., 87, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 65 years, died Dec. 8 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended St. Martin of Tours School, Bushwick, and Bishop McDonnell H.S., Crown Heights. She entered the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in Syosset, L.I., in September, 1952, and professed her final vows in September, 1958.

She received a bachelor’s degree in social studies from St. John’s University, followed by a master’s degree in religious studies from Manhattan College.

She began her many years of ministry in education locally at St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, 1955-56, and St. Gregory, Crown Heights, 1956-58.

In 1959, she moved to Long Island, where she ministered for two years at St. Mary’s Home, Syosset; and then St. Joseph the Worker, Patchogue, L.I., 1961-64; Our Lady of Mercy, Hicksville, 1964-70; St. Mary, Roslyn, 1970-85; and Mercy H.S., Riverhead, 1985-2004.

She also served as a cook in the children’s kitchen at the Convent of Mercy, Fort Greene, 1958-59.

She is survived by her sister, Peggy Driscoll.

Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
