Sister M. Mechtilda Rafalowska, C.S.F.N., who spent 26 years of her 62-year ministry at St. Stanislaus Kostka, Greenpoint, died Sept. 10, 2014 at IHM Convent in Monroe, Conn.
A native of Ansonia, Conn., she joined the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 1926.
In the Diocese of Brooklyn, she taught at St. Stanislaus Kostka, 1929-33; St. Stanislaus, Ozone Park, 1933-37; Holy Cross, Maspeth, 1951- 54; St. John Cantius, East New York, 1956-61; St. Adalbert, Elmhurst, 1961-62; Holy Cross, Maspeth, 1968- 69; and St. Stanislaus Kostka, 1969-91.
After retiring from the classroom, she lived at St. Stanislaus Kostka for another year before moving to the then-Immaculate Heart of Mary Provincialate in Monroe, Conn., in 1992.
A talented cook, she also was an excellent seamstress and artist. Her classroom decorations were her unique creations. She loved to shop for satin material on Delancey Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, bargaining with merchants for the best prices for their wares.
