Sister M. Helen Hemmer, I.H.M., a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for 72 years, died May 18 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 90.
A native of Syracuse, who was baptized as Elizabeth, she entered the IHM Congregation in 1946, professing temporary vows in 1949 and final vows in 1952.
Her only teaching assignment in the Brooklyn Diocese was at St. Ephrem, Dyker Heights, 1950-61. She also taught in Poughkeepsie, Syracuse, and Scranton.
She also served as a school principal in Wilmington, Del., and in Hollidaysburg, Pa.
She was a staff member in the Diocesan Office for Religious Education in Scranton, 1970-73.
She was also an IHM religious education consultant, 1974-78; a certified nursing assistant at Marian Convent in Scranton,1982-84; assistant to the curator of the art gallery at Marywood College, Scranton, 1984-86; coordinator of religious education for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, 1986-89; and consultant for spiritual formation, 2008-09.
From 1989 to 2007, she was a consultant with William H. Sadlier, Inc.
She retired in 2009.
