Sister Katherine McLaughlin, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 71 years, died April 13, while in hospice care in Maria Regina Residence.
She entered the Congregation in 1947 from St. Patrick’s parish, Philadelphia, Pa. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University, a master’s in religious studies from Providence College, and certification in educational computing from Iona College.
Formerly known as Sister Maria Charitas, she taught at Holy Name, Windsor Terrace, 1949-52; Immaculate Conception, Jamaica, 1952-53; Our Lady of Victory, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1953-55; St. Brendan, Midwood, 1955-59, and St. Vincent de Paul, Williamsburg, 1959-61.
On the high school level, she taught at Bishop McDonnell H.S., Crown Heights, 1961-62; Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, 1962-72; Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 1972-85, and St. Angela Hall H.S., Clinton Hill, 1985-86.
She returned to teach primary grades at Our Lady of Angels, Bay Ridge, 1986-91; St. Anselm, Bay Ridge, 1986-97; and St. Athanasius, Bensonhurst, 1997-98.
She was predeceased by her sister, Sister Ann McLaughlin, who died in January, 2007.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
