Sister Judith Marie Burchyns, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 60 years, died in Southside Hospital, July 30.
She entered the congregation in 1957 from St. Clare parish in Rosedale. She obtained then a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Brentwood College, followed by a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the Catholic University of Puerto Rico.
From Bowling Green State University, she earned a master’s degree in English as a second language.
Formerly known as Sister Marie Antoine, she taught at Visitation, Red Hook, 1960-61; St. Teresa of Avila, South Ozone Park, 1961-62; SS Peter and Paul, Williamsburg, 1962-65, and Colegio Santa Teresita, Ponce, Puerto Rico, 1965-70.
She was principal at: Colegio San Jose, San German, Puerto Rico, 1970-78; SS. Cyril and Methodius, Deer Park, L.I., 1978-83; Academia San Ignacio in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, 1983-89; St. John of God, Central Islip, L.I., 1989-92; Our Lady of Providence Regional, Central Islip, L.I., 1992-98, and Academia Maria Reina in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1998-2011.
In 2011, she was named vicar of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Puerto Rico, a post she held until 2016.
Because of her long-term commitment in Puerto Rico, there was a special viewing and liturgical service there to honor her at Academia Maria Reina San Juan, on Aug. 2.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Maria Regina Chapel, Aug. 5. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
