Sister Helen Cushing, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 77 years, died at Mount St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Mass., Jan. 22. She was 97.
Formerly known as Sister Marie Bernard, she taught third and sixth grades at Our Lady Help of Christians School, Midwood, 1937-47, and sixth and seventh grades at Resurrection-Ascension School, Rego Park, 1947-51.
She also ministered in Patchogue, L.I.; Massachusetts and Nova Scotia before retiring to Mount St. Vincent in 1998.
Sister Helen is survived by four sisters: Sister Regina Cushing, S.C., Teresa Currie, Barbara Pumphrey and Ann McGuiggin.
Burial was in St Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.
