Sister Gloria

Sister Gloria Portolano, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 58 years, died Aug. 10 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.

Born in Brooklyn, she was raised in Queens and attended Richmond Hill H.S. She initially pursued a career as a secretary. At age 34, following in the footsteps of her twin sister Marilyn, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from Incarnation parish, Queens Village.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Brentwood College in 1968.

She taught in several schools, including St. Mary, Mother of Jesus, Bensonhurst, 1962-64; St. John the Evangelist, Park Slope, 1964-65; St. Teresa of Avila, South Ozone Park, 1965-67; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Williamsburg, 1967-68; St. Teresa of Avila, Prospect Heights, 1968-69; and St. Anne, Brentwood, 1969-70.

At the Cleary School for the Deaf, Ronkonkoma, she served in the library and as a secretary, 1970-76. Her later secretarial ministries included Catholic Charities, Rockville Centre, 1976-77; Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, 1977-84, and 1992-2001; Dr. Hernandez, podiatrist, Brentwood, 1985-87; St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood, 1987-92, 2001-02; and St. Joseph Renewal Center, Brentwood, 2002-03.

She retired in 2003.

She was predeceased by her twin, Sister Marilyn Portolano, C.S.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Maria Regina Chapel, Aug. 14. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
