Sister Elizabeth Stringer, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 59 years, died Nov. 3. She was 77.
Raised in St. Joseph’s parish, Astoria, she attended the parish school and St. Agnes A.H.S., College Point. She entered the novitiate on Sept. 10, 1955 and professed her vows on Aug. 25, 1957.
Formerly known as Sister Sharon Elizabeth, she taught elementary education at Incarnation, Queens Village; St. Nicholas, Williamsburg; and St. Bartholomew, Elmhurst.
After earning degrees in science, she taught at Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica, and St. John the Baptist H.S., West Islip, L.I.
She served as principal of St. Boniface School, Elmont, L.I., and Dominican Commercial H.S. She was a curriculum coordinator for the Diocese of Rockville Centre and an adjunct instructor at Elizabeth Seton College, Yonkers, N.Y., where she taught nursing students.
From 1987 to 2001, she served as pastoral minister at St. Anthony’s Church, Rocky Point, L.I., and expanded parish services to include support groups for cancer patients, AIDS sufferers and their families; a ministry for widows and widowers; St. Anthony’s Bread which serves a daily hot meal; the Breadwinners Program for single mothers; and a ministry of praise, which engaged the homebound in prayer for the success of other ministries.
Through her engagement in interfaith groups, she contacted Habitat for Humanity and was instrumental in engaging parishioners in building a house for a local family.
The Town of Brookhaven honored her as “Woman of the Year” in 2001, and she also served as grand marshal for the Rocky Point St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
She served as a vice president at Dominican Village, Amityville, 2001-09, until she retired. In her retirement, she worked with “Nuns Build,” a group of Sisters who assisted the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and Superstorm Sandy in Long Beach, L.I.
She is survived by her brother Frank and his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Albert’s Chapel, Amityville, Nov. 7. Interment followed in the Sisters’ cemetery.
