Father Denis J. Hanly

Father Denis J. Hanly, M.M., a native of Brooklyn, who served as a Maryknoll priest for 55 years, died Oct. 26 at Mission St. Teresa’s Residence, Maryknoll, N.Y. He was 82.

After ordination on June 13, 1959, Father Hanly was assigned to Formosa (Taiwan). He returned to the U.S. in 1965 and taught at the Maryknoll School of Theology, where he served as assistant spiritual director, set up a field education department and was instrumental in establishing Maryknoll’s Overseas Training Program.

In 1968, Father Hanly was appointed pastor of Transfiguration Church in Chinatown, Manhattan, where he served until 1976.

He returned to Asia in 1976. Assigned to Hong Kong, he worked for the local church in parishes throughout the diocese as an assistant parish priest. He ministered there for over 37 years.

He graduated from St. Teresa of Avila Grammar School in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn Prep, Maryknoll’s Minor Seminary in Clarks Summit, Pa., and Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn, Ill.

He is survived by his sisters, Margaret Bisceglie of Weston, Conn., and Ann Meadows of Banning, Calif.

Burial was at Maryknoll.
