Sister Anne

Sister Anne Toomey, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 75 years, died Oct. 20. She was 93.

Raised in Corona and Middle Village, she attended the Dominican Sisters Juniorate in Water Mill, L.I., before entering the novitiate on Feb. 2, 1943.

She received her habit Aug. 4, 1943 and her religious name, Sister M. Imeldine. She professed her vows on Aug. 7, 1944.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a master’s in educational psychology at St. John’s University, Jamaica.

She taught elementary grades at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dyker Heights, and Holy Family, Park Slope, and high school Spanish at the Dominican Sisters Juniorate at Annunciation, Williamsburg.

She taught at St. Agnes Cathedral H.S., Rockville Centre; St. Michael’s H.S., East New York; Bishop McDonnell Annex at St. Bartholomew, Elmhurst; Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica; Holy Rosary, Yauco, Puerto Rico; and All Saints H.S., Williamsburg.

She ministered in drug rehabilitation  with the N.Y.C. Board of Education Drug Prevention Program; at Our Lady of Providence Dispensary in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she ministered with women addicted to drugs; and in drug rehabilitation in the Bronx.

She then studied nursing and worked as a nursing home aide in New England. She returned to New York in 1993, and ministered at Trinity School, Port Jervis, and at the Sullivan County Department of Correction before retiring in 2001.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 26 in St. Albert’s Chapel at the Motherhouse. Burial in the Sisters’ cemetery followed.
