Mary Hogan has been a member of the Brooklyn Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians for over 25 years. Her home division is LAOH Division Six in Greenpoint.
She has served as division and county president, and held several LAOH NYS offices. She also chaired and served in many committees in her county and division.
The great granddaughter of Irish and German immigrants, she was born at Saint Alban’s Naval Hospital to U.S. Naval Chief John P. Hogan and Dorothy Atchison. Raised in Greenpoint, as one of 13 children, she moved to Staten Island in 1998. She is a graduate from Iona College and a member of Holy Rosary parish.
Her career in telecommunications started in 1977 with the former New York Telephone as a directory assistant operator.
She went on to become a business representative and a field technician in the special service division where she served the AFL-CIO Communications of America Local 1101 as a union steward and is a member of the Telecommunication Workers Emerald Society.
A survivor of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack at Two World Trade Center, in the months following the attacks, she served on the Verizon WTC restoration team to restore service in downtown Manhattan. These same restoration teams also worked after Hurricane Sandy to restore services. She retired in 2015 from Verizon after 37 years.
While serving as the LAOH National Catholic Action Officer, she spearheaded a new initiative the “Spirit of St. Brigid,” a hands-on charity project that will take place at each of its national conventions. She has volunteered at soup kitchens, women’s shelters, stocking food banks, supply pregnancy crisis centers and painting the bedrooms in a retirement home of elderly Sisters.
She is currently the LAOH national organizer; president of Div. 6 in Greenpoint, and the LAOH Kings County missions and charity officer. She volunteered and worked on Brooklyn’s Irish-American Parade in Park Slope for many years and was elected the parade chairperson in 2016.
She volunteers for Pieta House, a suicide awareness and prevention center in Long Island City, promoting their services and fundraising.
She also volunteers weekly on the Mobile Soup Mobile for North Brooklyn Angels. She attended the first Great Irish Fair GIF and then volunteered for many years at with the LAOH.
