More than 250 Spanish-speaking pilgrims from St. Matthias parish, Ridgewood, made a Jubilee Year of Mercy pilgrimage to the Basilica of Regina Pacis, Bensonhurst.
It was led by Father Tarcisio Andro, parochial vicar and assisted by Deacon Oscar Perez.
The pilgrims arrived by bus at 9:15 a.m. to be welcomed by members of the parish hospitality committee and Dave Ali, coordinator at the Basilica for parish Jubilee events. A Gospel passage was proclaimed outside the Holy Door followed by the carrying of incense, cross, candles and the Book of Gospels in a procession into the basilica where the faithful recited morning prayers.
In English, with Spanish translation provided by Beggy Carpio, Ali gave all in attendance an overview of the basilica, explaining some of its history, the religious, cultural importance and significance to past and present generations of the faithful. One interesting bit of information is that the basilica has within its walls many types of marble.
The tabernacle was carved from a solid piece of Egyptian onyx, the two angels aloft the great columns in the sanctuary are of Italian Carrara marble which happens to be the same marble Michelangelo used to sculpt the statue of David.
Attendees signed the Book of Pilgrims stressing that prayers are offered at the basilica for the intentions of all those listed in the book.
The Blessed Sacrament was exposed as the pilgrims spent time in prayer and recited the Rosary. Father Marco Brioschi, P.I.M.E., and Father Juan DeJesus Ruiz, priests currently on staff at the Basilica administered the sacrament of reconciliation to many who patiently waited in lines.
“It is a joy to welcome our sisters and brothers on pilgrimage to the Basilica of Regina Pacis,” said Msgr. Ronald Marino, rector. “This Jubilee Year affords all of us a great opportunity to grow and become more active in our efforts to evangelize. Here at the Basilica, we encourage everyone to at least spend a bit of extra time to reflect on and perform some added form of corporal and spiritual works of mercy.”
After a short break, Father Andro celebrated Mass in St. Joseph’s Chapel and Columbarium located in the lower basilica. Music was provided by the members of St. Matthias’ choir.
