Retired Hospital Chaplain Will Be Buried in Haiti

Father Charlot

A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Lucien G. Charlot, a retired priest of the Brooklyn Diocese, was celebrated Oct. 12 at Sacred Heart Church in Homestead, Fla. He died Oct. 7 at Jackson South Community Hospital in Florida. He was 85.

Born in Haiti, he studied at Lycee Toussaint Louverture, Les Cayes, and Notre Dame Seminary, Port-au-Prince. He was ordained at Notre Dame Seminary on May 28, 1961.

He served here as an assistant at St. Gregory the Great, Crown Heights, 1967-68; Our Lady of Victory, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1968-69; and St. Mary Magdalene, Springfield Gardens, 1969-87.

He was chaplain at Kings County Hospital Center, Brooklyn, 1987-93. From 1993 to 2008, he was a member of Catholic Charities’ Pastoral Care for the Sick Office as part-time chaplain at Madonna Residence, Park Slope, and Kings County Hospital.

Father Charlot was incardinated into the Brooklyn Diocese in 1983.

When he retired in 2008, he took up residence at St. Augustine rectory, Park Slope, before moving to Florida in 2013.

“I had known him for about the last 10 years and even lived with him for many of those,” said Father Thomas Ahern, who was then-pastor at St. Augustine’s.

“He was a hospital chaplain for many years and he was inspiring to see how dedicated he was to helping the sick and the suffering.

“He was able to help so many both in the hospitals but also in the parish. People were always coming to him. He truly was very aware of people and their suffering and always wanted to help.”

“He also worked with the Haitian community and said (Creole) Mass every week. He welcomed all and was available to help anyone that needed it. Everyone had so much respect for him and he will be missed greatly,” Father Ahern said.

Among the immediate survivors is his sister, Marguerite Francillon of Homestead.

Burial was in Haiti.
