Religion as the Target

Dear Editor: Re: “Bishops See Document as Attack on Religion in U.S.,” the wording of this document is, sadly, not surprising.

President Obama appointed Mr. Castro and apparently he, like the president, has contempt for people of faith. Despite the First Amendment (“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”), we have seen religion being targeted by this administration over the last eight years.

Whether it was Obama’s request that Georgetown University cover a monogram symbolizing Jesus’ name where he was to give a speech, forcing religious institutions to offer birth control (including abortifacients) in their health care plans, describing the faithful as “Bitter, who cling to their guns and religion,” or deliberately omitting the phrase about “the Creator” when quoting the Declaration of Independence – an omission he has made on no less than seven occasions, he has made it abundantly clear how he feels about the faithful in our country.
