Claudia Preciado and Remee Mallay, the Spanish and eighth-grade science teachers, respectively, at Our Lady of the Snows School, N. Floral Park, were recently selected as recipients of the 9/11 Tribute Center’s 2016 Teacher Awards. They were honored at a ceremony at the Tribute Center in late February.

This award was given because of “the personal and meaningful manner in which [they] have engaged [their] students in exploring the history and lessons of September 11th,” which occurred before their students were even born.

Our Lady of the Snows’ teachers and the school Aquinas Club spent many hours over the summer and at the beginning of the school year planning and working on the construction of the exhibit, which was displayed in the school library.

Students were engaged in researching, discussing, analyzing and understanding 9/11 and its impact through a variety of disciplines, including language arts, history, civics and visual and media arts.

Among the displays students created were a hand-painted mural, photo books, digital presentations and tri-folds – each representing an aspect of the day. Through their work, students explained in great detail the events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001, and shared their work with the rest of the school community.
