Politics Becoming a Circus

Dear Editor: I was appalled to see that the reaction of the Senate Majority Leader to the recent passing of Chief Justice Scalia was to issue a warning to the president not to bother nominating a candidate, as it would be ignored. What a combination of bad taste and arrogance!

Watching the GOP presidential debates offers the American public a glimpse of the kind of nonsense that must go on constantly behind the scenes. No wonder nothing gets done! It is almost embarrassing to watch people vying for the highest position in the country engaging in extraordinarily immature and inappropriate behavior. One candidate baiting the other… the latter unable to ignore it without responding in kind. If this were a junior high school debate, the teacher in charge would have removed the participants from the stage and disqualified them from running until they grew up a little.

What a frightening prospect that one of these people might be representing our country around the globe. What a sad commentary on us – the American people – that we are cheering them on as if they are circus entertainment. It will be a serious wake-up call if one of these people becomes our next president.
