Catholic Schools Week 2017

Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Academy

Fostering Leadership and Service in Dyker Heights

Building on the history of Our Lady of Guadalupe School, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Academy opened in September, 2016, and offers an exceptional education to students in kindergarten through grade eight, and outstanding pre-school programs for three- and four-year-old children.

Students work in an environment with wireless Internet, encouraging the use of state-of-the-art laptops and iPads, combined with multimedia instruction using educational tools such as Mathletics, BrainPOP, Education City and Learn360. A robust, secure network allows for 1:1 BYOD use for students in grades four through eight, and the introduction of 3D printing adds another dimension to 21st-century learning.

Parents follow grades and assignments online and receive alerts about school closings and events. Our Lady of Guadalupe students succeed in math bees, art and essay contests. Students in pre-kindergarten through grade eight using the Latin and Greek Roots Challenge have improved their language skills by over 150 percent. Grades four through eight have begun online testing.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Academy’s N.Y.S. and Terra Nova test results are proof of its success.

Catholic identity is a strength at the academy. Students prepare First Friday and special liturgies, and learn to serve others through participation in the Mission Club and Gift-Giving. Leadership is joined to service in student council and the safety patrol, or by membership in audiovisual, computer and lab assistant programs. Two student choral groups and the tone chime choir perform at community and parish celebrations. Graduating students publish a yearbook annually. Three second graders won a national competition in “Project STEM.”

Graduates are awarded full and partial scholarships to high school, and the list of successful alumni includes physicians, attorneys and educators. Every student is encouraged to reach his or her potential in an atmosphere that encourages lifelong learning.
