Vincent J. Murphy, 79, of Hilton Head, S.C., since 2003, died May 8, at Brookdale Hilton Head Memory Care Unit after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Manhattan, he grew up in Flushing. He graduated from Cathedral Prep and Cathedral College, both Brooklyn; and Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
He later received a master’s degree in education at St. John’s University, Jamaica, pursued French language studies, and completed professional education in human resource management.
He was ordained a priest for the Brooklyn Diocese and until 1976 served in parish and educational ministries, including teaching at Cathedral Prep, Elmhurst.
He was laicized in 1976 and began a 25-year career in human resources.
He served in a number of executive positions at the Greater New York Savings Bank, the Den Norske Banking Corporation, and with the U.S. Homecare Corporation.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene, whom he married 1977.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Francis by the Sea Church, Hilton Head.
Burial will be at the parish columbarium.
