Howard Beach resident Tom Sowinski, a former baseball standout at Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, and St. John’s University, Jamaica, died Aug. 7 at Sunken Meadow Golf Course, Kings Park, L.I. He was 68.
The Richmond Hill native starred as a right-handed pitcher for the Molloy Stanners, 1962-64, in addition to playing basketball. During three seasons on the varsity baseball team, he compiled a 30-2 record, was named to The Tablet’s All-Scholastic team each year and was named Tablet Player of the Year in 1963 and 1964.
He was the starting and winning pitcher in two city championship victories in 1963 and 1964.
During his senior year, he didn’t lose a game (14-0). He was featured in the June 18, 1964 issue of The Tablet and was named to the Journal American All-Star team.
On a full athletic scholarship at St. John’s, he played basketball as a freshman but was the staff pitching ace on the 1966 and 1968 Division I College World Series baseball teams. He finished 41-7 in three seasons.
He was named an All-American (1968) and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched to a 16-7 record in three minor league seasons, advancing as high as Triple-A for the Albuquerque Dodgers.
After his playing career, he coached at Adelphi University, Garden City, L.I., leading the Panthers to three Division II College World Series. He also coached at Manhattan College, the Bronx, and Queens College, Flushing, and mentored young athletes.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr, Ozone Park, on Aug. 11.
I have known Tom for over 55 years. With Tom’s many achievements one escaped him; to be a major league-er. But, he took his talent and instructed others to follow their dreams. Tom was a good man but a better friend. I will miss him.
