Obituary: Sister Mary Thaddeus Glass, C.I.J.,

Sister Mary Thaddeus Glass, C.I.J., a member of the Congregation of the Infant Jesus, popularly known as the Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, for 65 years, died at Villa St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I. She was 91.

Born in Richmond Hill, she attended Bishop McDonnell H.S., Brooklyn, and trained to become a registered nurse at St. Catherine’s Hospital, Bushwick.

She entered the congregation from St. Benedict Joseph parish, Richmond Hill. She received her bachelor’s in science in nursing from St. John’s University and studied for her master’s in physical therapy at Western Reserve. She ministered as a home care nurse in Brooklyn, 1954-56; Mercy Hospital, Rockville Centre, 1956-58; as school nurse at Bishop McDonnell H.S., 1958-61.

After studies at Western Reserve, she went to Manchester, Ky., where she served in the Clay County Health Department, 1969-77, then spent the next 10 years, caring for her father and ministering in the Nursing Sisters Home Visiting Service in Brooklyn.

She returned to Kentucky in 1990 and served there for the next 24 years. After retirement, she ministered at the Manchester Federal Correctional Institute, and she volunteered with the Christian Appalachian Project, the Clay County/TriCounty Hospice, The Laurel Creek Health Care Center. When she returned to New York, she volunteered at Mercy Medical Center.
