Sister Margaret Was a Mercy Sister for 75 Years

Sister Margaret Clacherty, R.S.M., a member of the Brooklyn Sisters of Mercy for 75 years, died July 28 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, L.I. She was 93.

Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, her family immigrated to Brooklyn when she was a child. She attended St. Agatha and Our Lady of Perpetual Help schools, both Sunset Park. After graduating from Mercy Juniorate H.S., she entered the Mercy Sisters in 1937.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Robert, she taught in St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1940-42; St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, 1942-45; St. Patrick, Willoughby Ave., 1946-50; St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1951-58; Holy Innocents, Flatbush, 1958-61; Mater Christi H.S., Astoria, 1963-71; and Catherine McAuley H.S., Flatbush, 1971-72.

Her ministry in Rockville Centre took place at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, L.I., 1961-63; St. John the Evangelist, Riverhead, L.I., 1974-82; and Mercy H.S., Riverhead, 1982-96.

She retired to the Convent of Mercy in Brooklyn in 2004, and her last year was spent at Maria Regina Residence where she died.

She is survived by her sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.  

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone, on Aug. 1.  Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
