Sister Jeanne McCarthy, R.S.M., 86, a member of the Sisters of Mercy for 69 years, died Dec. 14 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.
She attended St. Gerard Majella Elementary School, Hollis, and Mercy Juniorate H.S. She entered the congregation from St. Gerard Majella parish on Feb. 2, 1944.
Formerly known as Sister Mary Gerard, she taught at St. Agatha, Sunset Park, 1946-48; Holy Innocents, Flatbush, 1948-49; St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1949-53 and 1959-61; Holy Rosary, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1953-57; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1957-59; and Catherine McAuley H.S., Flatbush, 1961-66.
She served in the Rockville Centre Diocese at Mercy H.S., Riverhead, L.I., 1966-76; and Holy Trinity H.S., Hicksville, L.I., 1976-83, 1984-85 and 1988-98.
She retired to Holy Trinity Convent in 1998 and then to Maria Regina Residence.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 19 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.
Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
