Obituary: Sister Grace Edward Pappert, O.P.

OBIT_SrGEPappertOPSister Grace Edward Pappert, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 78 years, died Jan. 13. She was 96.

Born Rose Marion in Brooklyn, she entered the congregation in 1934, from Corpus Christi parish, Mineola, L.I.

She taught elementary grades at St. Aloysius, Ridgewood, 1936-52; Holy Spirit, New Hyde Park, L.I., 1952-55; St. Patrick, Huntington, L.I., 1955-60; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lindenhurst, L.I., 1960-68; and St. Joseph Mountain School, Monticello, N.Y., 1968-70.

For 24 years, she served as head of the math department at St. Martin’s School, Amityville, 1970-94.

When she retired from teaching in 1994, she began a new ministry along with Sister Agnes Wassmer, O.P., as “The Dynamic Duo Volunteer Team,” serving St. Martin’s School in various ways.

Diminishing health eventually necessitated a move to Carlin Hall.

She is survived by her sister, Helen, and brother-in-law, Stanley Backel, of Florida.

    “Popeye” ( as we kids affectionately called her ) was my 8th-grade teacher, 1963 at OLPH-Lindenhurst.
    ~ i was a “cut-up” / Class Clown; she Handled me. She & i had a Mutual Respect.
    NOW it’s 2015: there’s a Lindenhurst sub-site on FaceBook: my former-classmates & i reminisce.
    There is NEVER A BAD WORD about “Popeye.” For many of us kids: she taught us well, SHE Paved The Way.
