Sister Anne Patrick, S.N.J.M., a noted theologian and a former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, died July 21 at home in Silver Spring, Md., after a long struggle with cancer. She was 75.

Sister Anne, a member of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, donated her body to Georgetown University Hospital. A memorial Mass for her will be celebrated Sept. 10 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Washington.

She taught religion at Carleton College, a small, private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minn., from 1980 until her retirement in 2009 as the William H. Laird professor of religion and the liberal arts.

She also held visiting professorships at the University of Tulsa, 1989, and at St. John’s University, Jamaica, 1996-97.

She taught a wide range of courses on Christianity, including courses on Catholicism, ethics, liberation theology, religion and literature, and women and religion.

Although the Catholic Church has stated definitively that women cannot be ordained as priests, Sister Anne was an advocate of women’s ordination.

In 2013, she received the Catholic Theological Society of America’s highest honor, the John Courtney Murray Award for “outstanding and distinguished achievement in theology.”
