Sister Anne Kelly, R.S.M., 89, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 70 years, died Aug. 3 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone.

Born in Elmhurst, she attended St. Bartholomew School and Bishop McDonnell M.H.S., Clinton Hill.

She received a bachelor’s in education from Fordham University, a master’s in theology from St. Bonaventure University, was certified in administration and supervision from Fordham University and qualified as an alcoholism counselor from South Oaks Hospital, Amityville, L.I.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy in September, 1945 and professed her final vows in September, 1951.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Vita, she taught in Sacred Heart, Brooklyn, 1948-50; St. Patrick, Kent Ave., Fort Greene, 1950-52; St. Agatha, Carroll Gardens, 1958-61; St. Jerome, East Flatbush, 1961-64, St. Joseph the Worker, Patchogue, L.I., 1964-66, and St. Patrick, Bay Shore, L.I., 1979-80.

She was principal at St. Joseph the Worker, Patchogue, 1966-75, where she remained as religious education coordinator, 1976-79; assistant principal at Patchogue Regional Catholic/Holy Angels, 1975-76, and principal at St. Patrick, Bay Shore, 1980-96. After her term as principal ended, she remained at St. Patrick’s as a volunteer until 2014.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone.

Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
