Sister Rosemary Lorenzen, formerly Rose LaSalette, CSJ, passed away on Sept. 1, having been a Sister of St. Joseph for 73 years.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, her parents, Thomas and Harriet Lorenzen, settled in St. Brendan’s parish, where Rosemary attended both elementary and high school, graduating in 1952. She then entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood.
In 1954, she began her ministry as an educator of first grade children in three Brooklyn schools: St. Thomas Aquinas, Queen of Peace, and St. Gabriel’s, continuing over a span of 12 years, and achieving a BA in mathematics at St. Joseph College, Brooklyn, and subsequently an MA in mathematics from Manhattan College.
Her subsequent assignments included St. Brendan’s; St. Rose of Lima, Parkville Avenue; and St. Athanasius, also in Brooklyn, where she taught seventh and eighth grade classes.
Rosemary’s roots and educationally exceptional math acumen, as well as her ministry, could not be more appropriate for her and her students.
She retired in 2009 and was a member of the Brentwood Motherhouse community until her death.
Sister Rosemary’s funeral in Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood was celebrated on Sept. 5 and was offered by Father Seth Awo Doku. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
Brother Francis Delvaux, a member of the Holy Cross Brothers and a former teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, died Sept. 14 in Texas. He was 86.
A native of Midland, Pennsylvania, Brother Francis entered the Holy Cross Brothers in 1963.
His first teaching assignment was at St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, for the 1965-1966 academic year. He had previous experience teaching catechism, and he enjoyed teaching grade school students.
After teaching in Brooklyn, the first leap Brother Francis made to another continent came with his 1966-1970 assignment to teach at Notre Dame International School in Rome, Italy. For the 1976-1977 school year, Brother Francis returned to the States to teach at St. Thomas Aquinas.
After a year on his fourth continent, feeling homesick, he came back to teach at St. Thomas Aquinas again from 1978 to 1981.
Brother Francis moved to Austin, Texas, in 2015 and helped other Holy Cross Brothers as needed. He celebrated the 60th anniversary of his profession of vows last year.
Services were celebrated at Brother Vincent Pieau Residence in Austin. Burial was in the nearby congregation’s plot in Assumption Cemetery.
Sister Patricia A. Anglin, OP, died on Sept.16.
Pat entered the congregation at the age of 35 and ministered as a Dominican for 39 years.
Pat was born in Brooklyn on March 4, 1951, to Richard and Catherine (Devine) Anglin.
After graduating from high school, Pat went to work for The Equitable Group and Health, NYC. She was there for 16 years. In addition to her work in New York City, Pat volunteered at Holy Cross Church on Church Avenue in Brooklyn.
She also pursued her studies, earning several degrees.
In 1986, Pat entered the congregation. She continued working at Equitable during her candidate (postulant) year.
Pat enjoyed vacationing with the sisters with whom she lived in St. Sebastian’s convent in Woodside.
Religious education was the focus of Pat’s years in ministry. She taught religious studies and served as pastoral associate in St. Mark’s Parish in Brooklyn, St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Ozone Park, St. Ann’s Parish (now Mary’s Nativity-St. Ann’s Parish) in Flushing, and St. Gregory the Great Parish in Bellerose.
In addition to parish ministry, Pat served on congregational committees.
In the 1990s, she served as co-director of our Dominican Associates and as our promoter of preaching.
The wake and Mass of Christian Burial were celebrated on Sept. 23. Interment followed in St. Dominic Cemetery.
