Sister Anna May English, S.C. (Sister Martin de Porres), a Sister of Charity-Halifax for 71 years, died at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, Massachusetts, on April 17 at the age of 89.
Sister Anna May was born in the Bronx, NY, to Irish immigrants. Her ministry was devoted to education and healthcare.
She taught at schools in New York and Massachusetts, including teaching grades 4 and 5 at Our Lady of the Cenacle, Richmond Hill, from 1957-68 and grade 4 at Our Lady of Angels, Brooklyn, from 1968-70.
Passionate for the care of others, she transitioned to nursing and spent three decades missioning in New York hospitals, including Mary Immaculate Hospital, Kew Gardens Hospital, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, and Saints Joachim and Anne Residence in Brooklyn, New York.
Sister Anna May resided at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Convent, Jamaica; Our Lady of the Cenacle Convent, Richmond Hill; Saint Barnabas Convent, Bellmore, New York; and finally, at Our Lady of Angels, Brooklyn.
She continued nursing her sisters when she moved to Mount Saint Vincent, Wellesley, Massachusetts, until her retirement in 2007.
She is survived by her brother, James, of Oklahoma, as well as her sisters in community.
Sister Anna’s Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 28 at Mount Saint Vincent Chapel, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Interment followed at Saint Mary Cemetery, Needham, Massachusetts.
