Sister Agnes Eileen Meagher, formerly Sister Edward Mariel, died on Dec. 8, 2025, having resided at St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood, since 2018.
The daughter of Michael and Delia Meagher, Sister Agnes grew up in Guardian Angel Parish in Brooklyn and attended St. Mark’s Elementary School and St. Brendan High School.
After her Novitiate (1952 to 1954), Sister Agnes began her educational career, teaching in St. Agnes DeGraw St., St. Matthews, St. Athanasius, and at St. Benedict Joseph Labre in Richmond Hill.
Her degree in French from Hunter College led her to assignments at Holy Family High School in Huntington and The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica, where her expertise and education in library science became her forte.
As librarian at St. Joseph College, Brooklyn, for three years and at the Patchogue campus from 1974 to 2006, Sister Agnes’ ministry there abounded when she became the librarian director.
Her gifts were shared with all students and staff and left an unforgettable mark on their educational pursuits — an unforgettable memory for all who worked at or attended the college and who knew Sister Agnes.
Eventually, this ministry morphed into a position assisting the archivist of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, as Sister Agnes delved into history, personnel, and accomplishments of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood.
The history became expansive through joint efforts and the unimaginable giftedness of the Sisters.
Sister Agnes’ personality was straightforward, articulate, and inspired by research and discovery. She was a member of Delta Epsilon Sigma and Delta Phi Mu, International Library Science Honor Societies.
Her beloved family, community, and friends will miss this great woman.
Her Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Dec. 17, 2025, at Sacred Heart Chapel in Brentwood.
The presider was Bishop William Koenig of Wilmington, Delaware. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
