Sister Kathleen Anne Loughlin, CSJ, was called home to God on Feb. 24, at age 77. A Sister of St. Joseph for 55 years, Sister Kathleen entered the Community from St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Woodhaven, on Aug. 30, 1967, where she completed elementary school.
She attended Bishop McDonnell High School and St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, where she earned a BA in English. Following her Novitiate, she began her ministry in education at Our Lady of Victory School in Floral Park, New York, in 1969, after which she taught Language Arts in grades 7-8 at St. Michael’s School, Brooklyn.
Sister Kathy’s outstanding pedagogical gifts were recognized as she was sent to St. Angela Hall Academy, Brooklyn (1975-1979), while pursuing her MA in English from Brooklyn College. Then, for 14 years, she was a teacher of English at St. Joseph College, Brooklyn, until 1993, when she began her ministry as an assistant professor in Adult Education at Columbia Teachers College, New York, having received her M.A. and Ed.D there.
Her expertise in technology led her back to Brentwood, where she commenced an innovative IT program for Sisters and others. She fostered growth in this area, as well as personal acumen and development for students as a life coach. Her work spanned service all over Long Island with a focus on this and other congregational services, in particular with our newspaper (FOCUS).
Sister Kathy will be missed by her friend, Sister Mary Lou Buser, by her family as well as the Sisters of St. Joseph. Father Sean Gann celebrated her Mass of Christian Burial on March 3 in Sacred Heart Chapel, Brentwood, followed by her burial in Calvary Cemetery.
