Sister Rosemary Giebel, O.P., a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 65 years, died June 27. She was 85.

Born in Glendale, she attended St. Pancras School where she met the Dominican Sisters. She attended high school at the Juniorate, Water Mill, L.I. Having received the religious name, Sister Wendelin Marie, she professed vows on Aug. 6, 1949.

She taught at Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians, Woodside; Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jamaica; St. Ignatius, Hicksville, L.I.; St. Luke, Whitestone; and St. Martin of Tours, Amityville.

She also taught social studies at St. Agnes Academic H.S., College Point, 1979-81; Queen of the Rosary Academy, Amityville, 1981-82; and La Salle Military Academy, Oakdale, L.I., 1984-87. Prior to retirement, she served as a residence aide and pastoral minister at the Motherhouse and in  Dominican Village in Amityville. Sister later volunteered at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, L.I., 2004-09, until ill health caused her to enter Carlin Hall in 2009.

Interment was in the sisters’ cemetery in Amityville.

 

Sister Charlotte Tighe, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville, L.I., for 84 years, died June 28. Sister was 100 years old.

Born outside Limerick City in Ireland, she read a Mission magazine and decided to become a missionary sister. In 1929, she arrived at Ellis Island. After a brief stay at St. Bartholomew Convent in Elmhurst, she was brought to the Novitiate in Amityville. Having received the name Sister Jean Baptist, she took her vows on April 30, 1931.

She taught at St. Luke, Whitestone; St. Clement, South Ozone Park; American Martyrs, Bayside; and Good Shepherd, Marine Park, where she also was principal for three years.

At St. Joseph Patron, Bushwick, she served as coordinator of the convent and endeavored to bring forth the changes resulting from Vatican II. She volunteered at Wyckoff Heights Hospital, which led to her pursuing a course in practical nursing. She then worked as an LPN at Menorah Nursing Home in Brooklyn for one year, when she received a call from Amityville to minister in the infirmary in the Motherhouse, 1974-76.

The following two years, she worked at Caritas Medical Services in Jamaica. From 1978 to 1990, she ministered as a school nurse at Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica.

From 1990 to 1992, she served as an advocate at the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal in Rockville Centre. As a staff assistant at Siena Spirituality Center, Water Mill, L.I., she assisted with pastoral services from 1992 to 1996 when she moved to Queen of the Rosary Motherhouse to engage in intercessory prayer. She moved to Carlin Hall as her health diminished.

Interment was in the Sisters’ cemetery in Amityville.

 

Sister Adele Marie Morgan, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 69 years, died June 15.

She entered the congregation from St. Catherine of Sienna parish, St. Albans, in 1945.

She attended Manhattan College; Providence College, R.I.; and then Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. She also studied at religious education centers in Brussels, London, Paris, Geneva, Florence and Rome, and her work in liberation theology took her to Peru.

She served at St. Francis of Assisi, Crown Heights, 1947-48; St. Pascal Baylon, St. Albans, 1948-53; St. Clare, Rosedale, 1953-57; Most Precious Blood, L.I.C., 1957-60; St. Rita, L.I.C., 1960; St. Anne, Brentwood, 1960-64; Holy Name of Mary, Valley Stream, L.I., 1964-65; St. Martha, Uniondale, L.I., 1965-66, and Stella Maris H.S., Rockaway Park, 1966-70.

From 1970 to 1978, she worked as a consultant by Winston Publishing Company, Minneapolis, Minn.

She worked as religious education director at Resurrection, Rye, N.Y., 1978-91, and then St. Augustine, New City, N.Y., 1991-93.

After three years at Sacred Heart, Glendale, 1993-96, and spending several years in residence at The Mary Louis Academy Convent, Jamaica Estates, she retired to Brentwood.

 

Sister Esther Mary DeRosa, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 66 years, died June 13.

She entered the congregation from St. Thomas Aquinas parish, Flatlands, in 1948. She attended St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, and received a master’s in theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, L.I. She also studied at Potsdam College, Gettysburg College and Florida State University.

She taught at Immaculate Conception, Williamsburg, 1950-54; St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach, 1954-58; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria, 1958-64; Our Lady of the Snows, N. Floral Park, 1964-68; St. Rose of Lima, Parkville, 1968-69; Our Lady of Victory, Floral Park, L.I., 1969-70; St. Mel, Flushing, 1970-72; St. Anthony of Padua, East Northport, L.I., 1972-92; and Our Lady of Sorrows, Corona, 1992-94.

She served in the Sisters’ business office, 1994-95, and Maria Regina Residence, both Brentwood, 1995-2000.
