Deacon Ernst Paul, a retired deacon who served at Our Lady of Miracles parish, Canarsie, died Friday, Sept. 19. He was 77 years old.
He was ordained a deacon on April 9, 1983 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.
A native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he received a Ph.D. in 1963 from Port-au-Prince State University.
Upon settling in the states, Deacon Paul received a bachelor of sciences degree in accounting in 1993 from St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights. He worked as an accountant at New York Life Insurance on Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
After being ordained a deacon, he was first assigned to St. Matthew’s Church, Crown Heights. He later served at St. Rita, East New York, before moving on to Our Lady of Miracles.
He also was given a special assignment at the Bhrags Tompkins Park Senior Citizens Center, Bedford-Stuyvesant. He retired from the diaconate on June 30, 2014.
His interests included singing, art, theater, social work and teaching.
He is survived by his wife Celine of nearly 50 years and six children: Ernst Jr., Claudine, Peggy, Gregory, and twins Sabine and Sandra.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Sept. 27 at Holy Family Church, Canarsie. Burial will follow in St. Charles/Resurrection Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
Sister Cora Marie Sprolle, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 74 years, died Sept. 9. She was 95.
Born in Brooklyn, Agnes Sprolle first met the Dominican Sisters at St. Thomas the Apostle parish, Woodhaven.
She entered the Dominican Sisters on Sept. 8, 1940. She later received her religious name and was formally received on Aug. 4, 1941.
Sister Cora devoted much of her life to teaching elementary education at St. Patrick, Bay Ridge; American Martyrs, Bayside; St. Martin, Amityville, L.I.; St. Boniface, Elmont, L.I.; St. John, Riverhead, L.I.; Our Lady of Lourdes, Massapequa Park, L.I.; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lindenhurst, L.I.
At Our Lady of Perpetual Help, she belonged to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and served as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to sick and homebound parishioners.
In 1996, she moved to the Motherhouse in Amityville where she served as a pastoral minister. Declining health necessitated a move to Carlin Hall, Amityville, in 2005.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Albert’s Chapel, Amityville, Sept. 11. Burial in the Sisters’ cemetery followed.
