Sister Catherine Therese Barrett, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 66 years, died Feb. 20 at Mt. St. Vincent Motherhouse, Wellesley Hills, Mass. She was 88.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Katherine, she was missioned at Resurrection-Ascension, Rego Park, first as a teacher, 1945-56, and later as principal, 1962-68.  She also taught at Our Lady Help of Christians, Midwood, 1956-62, and Bishop Reilly H.S., Fresh Meadows, 1968-73.

She later ministered in St. Barnabas, Bellmore; Dorchester, Mass.; and Quincy, Mass., before retiring to the motherhouse in 2007.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 24 in Mt. St. Vincent Chapel, Wellesley Hills. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.

Sister Francis Bernadette Long, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 59 years, died Feb. 2. She was 79.

She entered the congregation from St. Jerome’s parish, East Flatbush. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph College, Clinton Hill, she taught in the following schools: Holy Child Jesus, Richmond Hill, 1955-57, and 1960-62; Most Precious Blood, Long Island City, 1957-58; Queen of All Saints, Fort Greene, 1958-60; St. Martin of Tours, Bushwick, 1962-64; Immaculate Heart of Mary, Kensington, 1964-70; Sacred Heart Seminary, Hempstead, 1970-71, and 1980-81; St. Rose of Lima, Parkville, 1971-73; St. Vincent de Paul, Williamsburg, 1973-78; and Immaculate Conception, Jamaica, 1978-80.

She served as principal of St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach, 1981-2000, and worked in Resurrection-Ascension, Rego Park, 2000-01, before she retired.

A wake was held at Stella Maris Convent, Rockaway Park, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial from St. Camillus Church on Feb. 4. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.

Sister Mary Frances Manning, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 66 years, died Feb. 23 at Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Mass. She was 86.

Formerly known as Sister Francis William, she taught first and fifth grades at St. Sebastian School, Woodside, 1945-52, and first grade at Our Lady Help of Christians, Midwood, 1962-68.

She also ministered in Bellmore, L.I.; Staten Island; Westmont, N.J.; Massachusetts; and Nova Scotia. She retired to the motherhouse in 2007.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 27 in Mt. St. Vincent Chapel, Wellesley, Mass. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.

Sister Mary Macrina Quinn, C.S.J., 83, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 63 years, died Jan. 27.

She entered the congregation from St. Teresa’s parish, Prospect Heights.

Her teaching assignments included St. Martin of Tours, Bushwick, 1951-55; Mary’s Nativity, Flushing, 1955-57; Most Precious Blood, Long Island City, 1957-61; and St. Vincent De Paul, Elmont, L.I., 1961-62.

For two years, she worked in the main office in Brentwood, and then returned to teaching at St. Charles Borromeo, Brooklyn Heights, 1964-76, followed by Immaculate Conception, Jamaica, 1976-80.

From 1980 to 1987, she was missioned to Maria Regina, Brentwood, to work in the chapel and business office. She then became a member of the pastoral care team there until her death.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 3 in Maria Regina Chapel, Brentwood. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.

Sister Mary Bradley, C.S.J., a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 70 years, died Feb. 18. She was 88.

She entered the congregation from Our Lady of Sorrows parish, Corona. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history at St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, and her master’s in religion from St. Bonaventure.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Eugene, she taught at St. Francis of Assisi, Crown Heights, 1944-46; St. Christopher, Baldwin, 1946-52; St. Stanislaus Kostka, Maspeth, 1952-59; St. Clare, Rosedale, 1959-62; Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 1963-67; St. Joseph H.S., Downtown Brooklyn, 1967-68; and The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, 1975-82.

She was principal of the catechetical school at St. Bernard, Levittown, 1968-69, and principal/superior at Fontbonne Hall Academy, 1969-75.

She was elected to serve as Regional Superior, 1982-90, before returning to St. Joseph H.S., as librarian and academic counselor.

She later retired to Stella Maris Convent, Far Rockaway.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Camillus Church, Far Rockaway, Feb. 21. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.

Sister St. Gerard Marks, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 73 years, died Feb. 11. She was 88.

She entered the congregation from Holy Spirit parish, Borough Park.  She earned her registered nurse degree from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing, Long Island City, 1954, followed by a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in nursing education from St. John’s University, Jamaica. She obtained her clinical pastoral education (CPE) in pastoral care from Queens Hospital Center.

Although her ministry began with teaching on the elementary level at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park, 1941-42, and St. Martin of Tours, Bushwick, 1942-51, her religious life was spent as a nurse tending to her patients, instructing student nurses, caring for the elderly and serving on boards of directors.

She was a nursing instructor at St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing, L.I.C., 1951-60, before serving as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Far Rockaway, and St. John’s Queens Hospital, Elmhurst, respectively from 1960 through 1969.

When Maria Regina Convent, Brentwood, was in need of a nurse in charge of staff, she served in that capacity.

In 1973, she moved to St. John’s Queens Hospital to work as a clinical specialist and then to Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jamaica, to coordinate hospice care. She continued her nursing in Brentwood, 1990-2009, and then retired.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Maria Regina Chapel Feb. 16. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
