Sister M. Joanella Ryan, I.H.M., of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Feb. 15, 2012, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 94.
Born in Brooklyn as Mary (Marian) Mary Ellen McGowan Ryan, she entered the IHM congregation in 1934, and made her final profession of vows on Aug. 1, 1940.
Her only teaching assignment in the Brooklyn Diocese was at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School, Forest Hills, 1948-55, and 1989-93.
Sister Joanella also served as local superior at the Motherhouse in Scranton, Pa., from 1962 to 1967 and at the IHM Generalate from 1971 to 1974.
Among the immediate survivors is her sister-in-law, Mary P. Ryan of Brooklyn.
Interment was at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.


Sister M. Selina Malone, I.H.M., of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Feb. 16, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 93.
Born in Brooklyn, and given the name Mary Catherine, she entered the IHM congregation in 1938, making her final profession of vows in 1944.
Her teaching assignments in the Diocese of Brooklyn included: St. Peter of Alcantara, Port Washington, L.I., 1947-56; and St. Ephrem School, Dyker Heights, 1972-78. From 1993 to 2004, she was a prayer minister at St. Ephrem’s and from 2004 until the time of her death, she was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.
She is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Howlett of Avon, Mass., and Regina Crookshank of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a brother, William of Lakewood, N.J.
