Sister Mary Vincent O’Neill, S.C.N., a Sister of Charity for 67 years, died Oct. 8. She was 87.
She entered the Vincentian Sisters of Charity, Pittsburgh, Pa., from St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Jamaica, in 1945. The Vincentian Sisters merged with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Ky., in 2008.
She attended Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, and Alabama State University, Montgomery, Ala.
She taught in the dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg, Pa., and Mobile, Ala. She also ministered to poor and marginalized African Americans in Phenix City and Montgomery, Ala.
After serving 39 years in education, she became a licensed practical nurse. She ministered at the Vincentian Sisters of Charity Infirmary and at the Infirmary of the Sisters of St. Francis, Bellevue, N.Y. She regularly visited residents of Vincentian Home and Vincentian Personal Care.
She is survived by her siblings: Father Hugh O’Neill, Margaret Gillard, Jean Lane, Catherine of Jamaica, N.Y., and Daniel of Jamaica, N.Y.
Burial was in Pittsburgh.
Sister Mary Francis McConnell, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 75 years, died at Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Mass., Oct. 5. She was 97.
She taught third-, sixth- and eighth-grade children at Our Lady of Angels, Bay Ridge, 1937-50, and sixth grade in the religious education program at Holy Child Jesus, Richmond Hill, 1978-79. She retired in 2004.
Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.
Sister Regina Bernadette Wesnofske, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, for 78 years, died Oct. 4. She was 94.
Regina “Jeanie” Stella entered the congregation from St. Hugh of Lincoln, Huntington Station, L.I., in 1934. The following year, she received the habit and her religious name, Sister Regina Bernadette. On Aug.18, 1936, she pronounced her religious vows.
Her first teaching assignment was at St. Martin, Amityville. In 1938, she moved to Brooklyn and taught at St. Michael, E. New York, and Our Lady of Solace, Coney Island. She taught at Corpus Christi, Mineola, L.I., 1940-47; St. Pancras, Glendale, 1947-49; St. Patrick, Huntington, L.I., 1958-62; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lindenhurst, L.I., 1962-65; and St. Catherine of Siena, Franklin Square, L.I., 1965-69.
She acted as a chauffeur for retired Sisters in Villa Maria, Water Mill, 1969-72.
She was an assistant librarian in Maria Regina H.S., Uniondale, L.I., 1972-1984, and Corpus Christi, 1984-88. When she retired to Rosary Hall, Amityville, she volunteered in the library of St. Anthony H.S., Huntington.
She is survived by her sister Beatrice Frey of Huntington Station, and her brother Albert of Commack.
Sister Rose Carmel Saladino, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, for 80 years, died Oct. 4. She was 98.
Born in St. Joseph Patron parish, Bushwick, Vitina (known as Mathilda) entered the congregation in 1932. In 1934, she pronounced religious vows.
She taught at St. Joseph Patron, 1934-45; Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica, 1945-49. St. Bartholomew, Elmhurst, 1949-54; Our Lady of Lourdes, Malverne, L.I., 1953-58; and Sacred Heart, E. Glendale, 1958-60.
For three years she was missioned to Holy Rosary, Yauco, Puerto Rico. When she returned to Brooklyn, she taught at St. Joseph Patron, 1963-67, and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dyker Heights, 1967-79. She was a librarian in St. Jude School, Canarsie, 1979-81, and a clerical volunteer at Good Shepherd, Marine Park, 1981-98, until she retired to Carlin Hall.
She was a great proponent of St. Joseph, distributing medals and holy cards around his feast day.
