Sister Margaret

Sister Margaret McCarthy, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 73 years, died Sept. 15 at Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Mass., at the age of 92.

Formerly known as Sister John Vianney, she was missioned at Resurrection-Ascension, Rego Park, teaching second through fifth grades, 1940-46; Bishop Reilly H.S., Fresh Meadows, 1963-69; and St. Francis Prep High School, Fresh Meadows, 1974-78.

She also ministered in Patchogue, L.I.; Massachusetts; and Canada. She retired to Mt. St. Vincent in 1998.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Mt. St. Vincent Chapel, Sept. 19. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.

James Wagner, the brother of Deacon Christopher Wagner of St. Bernard’s, Mill Basin, and Good Shepherd, Marine Park, died Sept. 26. He was 54.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 2 at Resurrection Church, Gerritsen Beach.

Father Jorge E. Queija, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana, Cuba, who has served in the Brooklyn Diocese since 1966, died Sept. 29. He was 74 years old.

He was ordained in Habana on Oct. 31, 1965. He served in the Diocese of Los Teques, Venezuela, before coming to Brooklyn, where he served the parishes of Ascension, Elmhurst; St. Cecilia, Greenpoint; Immaculate Conception, Astoria; and Our Lady of Mercy, Forest Hills. He was a chaplain at Greenpoint Hospital, and Wyckoff Heights Hospital. He also taught at St. John’s Prep, Astoria, and Mater Christi H.S., Astoria.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 3 at Immaculate Conception Church, Astoria.
