The Nazareth R.H.S., East Flatbush, girls’ basketball team finished at the runner-up in the 2014 GCHSAA state finals played March 8 at Holy Trinity H.S., Hicksville, L.I.
The Lady Kingsmen put up a strong fight but dropped a 60-47 contest to St. Anthony’s H.S., Huntington, L.I.
The game was tied at 27 at halftime, but the Friars went on a 13-2 run early in the third quarter to establish a nine-pt. lead. St. Anthony’s kept up the pressure throughout the fourth, and Nazareth never got within 11 pts. the rest of the way.
Senior point guard Bianca Cuevas, who has committed to play basketball next fall at the University of South Carolina, led the Lady Kingsmen with 16 pts. The night before, Cuevas poured in 50 pts. against Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village, in the semifinal round.
Senior forward Jennifer Fay added 10 pts., six rebounds and five steals, while senior forward Yazmine Belk scored nine pts. and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Though Nazareth surely wanted a chance to play in the federation tournament, the team enjoyed much success this season, and the semifinal win over the Lady Royals will live on as an instant classic.
