Mary Queen of Heaven School has educated the children of Mill Basin for over 65 years, with emphasis on educating the whole child academically, spiritually and socially in preparation for their future role as citizens in a diverse society.
The faculty and staff are dedicated to maintaining a Christian atmosphere of respect, love and concern for all students. Their attention is focused on the Common Core Standards, and new strategies for learning have been implemented. As part of the curriculum, the younger grades are learning music, while the older grades are learning to speak Spanish. The school also offers an early morning drop-off and after-school program.
The school community attends First Friday Mass and a monthly prayer service. This year, all grades are involved in community service, which is a reminder to students of their faith.
Monthly assemblies are designed to encourage the children to achieve. The school also honors a student from each class as Student of the Month. All stu- dents that have arrived on time daily and have completed all of their assignments and follow the school policies become Lords and Ladies of the Queen’s Court.
Mary Queen of Heaven School has a Junior Beta Club that is responsible for conducting a schoolwide charitable project each month, such as collecting food for the food pantry, helping less fortunate children and sending cards to the homebound.
Students are encouraged to share their talents with others. The school offers dance and band along with many opportunities for students to enter art and essay contests. Students frequently win awards that showcase their talents.
Some of the eighth-grade students attend St. Edmund Prep each morning for a high school class in Earth Science in preparation for the June Regents. Former graduates have received scholarships to such prestigious high schools as Regis, Xavier, Bishop Loughlin, St. Saviour and Bishop Kearney.
