Divine Mercy Catholic Academy was named a Tournament Champion in the NYC Division of this year’s NBA Math Hoops Tournament, sponsored by the NBA and Learn Fresh, at George Washington University, Washington D.C., March 10.
NBA Math Hoops is a basketball board game and curriculum that allows students to learn math skills using real statistics from their favorite NBA and WNBA players.
Students from Divine Mercy and St. Elizabeth Catholic Academy, both Ozone Park; St. Helen Catholic Academy, Howard Beach and Notre Dame Catholic Academy, Ridgewood, competed in the tournament and tested their math skills against peers from over 30 middle schools. Teams competed in a NCAA-style tournament leading to an Elite 8, Final 4 and Championship game.
While in Washington, students also had a guided tour of the Capital building arranged by Sen. Chuck Schumer’s office.
