A delegation of 18 people from Local 3 electricians of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), based in Flushing, journeyed to Padua, Italy, for a special 9/11 Memorial Mass and ceremony. Mass was celebrated in the Basilica del Carmine in Padua by Auxiliary Bishop Alberto Peloso of the Diocese of Padua. The invitation was extended by Carlo DiMassie, the president of the National Italian Electricians Union. On Sept. 11, 2001, among the 61 union construction workers killed in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, 17 electricians were from Local 3. About half of them were of Italian ancestry from Brooklyn and Queens. The Italian trade unionists were showing solidarity on the 12th anniversary of 9/11. Above, a ceremony was conducted at the 9/11 Memorial Bell in Padua. From left are Gary LaBarbara; Father Brian Jordan, O.S.F., chaplain of the N.Y.C. building trades and St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights; Ivo Rossi, mayor of Padua; Chris Erikson, business manager who coordinated the 18-member delegation of Local 3 and the building trades. Below are members of the Sword and Light Pipe and Drum Band of Local 3.
