‘Little Deaths’ of Lent

Dear Editor: As had Carol Powell (Feb. 10), I had been reflecting on the collision of Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day this year.

At first, it seemed to be a meeting of opposites. But upon further reflection, the day we are asked to recall that we came from dust and shall return to dust, that this is not our forever home, we also celebrate love. What greater love is there than this, that God, in the Divine Person of Jesus, should lay down His life for all of us, whom He calls friends?

As we observe Lent this year, perhaps we cold look for opportunities to “lay down our life” for another in the many “little deaths” that present themselves to us each day.
