Working With Archbishop Sheen, Women Religious

Dear Editor: Thank you for publishing the article, “The Women Who Helped Carry Archbishop Sheen’s Mission Across the Globe” (Aug. 29).

It was an accurate, inspiring, and fitting tribute to the dedicated “small army of women” who worked at the National Office of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith when Archbishop Fulton Sheen was the national director.

It brought back many happy memories. It was an honor and joy for me to work alongside them during my college summers (1964-1966).

I was the office’s mailroom clerk. I remember our mid-afternoon office breaks when Archbishop Sheen would join us in the open office area for prayer, very often with a guest.

I especially remember one afternoon prayer break in the summer of 1966 when Archbishop Sheen’s guests were two missionary religious sisters. He presented a gift to their mission. At the time, I knew not of Mother Teresa, but I later confirmed that one of the visiting religious sisters was her.

My wife and I plan to be in St. Louis for the beatification of Archbishop Sheen on Sept. 24 and also to participate in the pilgrimage to the beatification from Peoria, Illinois.

I will remember all who I worked with at the National Office of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and at the Pontifical Mission Societies.

Remembering Father Mychal Judge

Dear Editor: Rest in peace, Father Mychal Judge (“ ‘Walk’ Honors Chaplain Father Judge, Fallen First Responders He Served,” Sept. 11, 2021).

When he was a young priest, he came to my childhood home in Upper Greenwood Lake to give my grandmother last rites.

I’m sure he is an angel in Heaven!

Dear Editor: Medal of Honor awardee.

Some of the bravest people I met in Vietnam were the conscientious objectors, Christian missionaries, alliance helpers, and the Navy chaplains assigned to the Marines.

All of them served unarmed.
