Memories of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy

Dear Editor: The diocesan decision to close Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy will not erase fond memories for me, a 1951 graduate.

  • My eighth grade class had 88 students; the girls’ class had 82.
  • Our tough eighth grade teacher, Sister Theresa Carmel, was rumored to be a former police sergeant.
  • I joined Colonel Durante’s Cadet Corp. and marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.
  • St. Rose of Lima’s basketball team was our nemesis.
  • I got cut from the altar boys because I couldn’t memorize the Confiteor.
  • Classmate John Hamrogue became the superior of the Redemptorist order.

Father Edward A. Wallace, Chaplain and Pastor

Dear Editor: Thank you for your article regarding Father Edward A. Wallace (The Life, Death, and Life Again of Father Wallace During WWI, March 29).

It is a remarkable story about a remarkable man and chaplain. He served in both World War I and II, as well as in Korea, before receiving a Silver Star and Navy Cross for his service.

But what we at the Parish of St. Mark-St. Margaret Mary remember him for most, is that in 1920 he became the first pastor of St. Margaret Mary Parish in Manhattan Beach.

Father Wallace oversaw the building of St. Margaret Mary Church. He served as pastor from 1920 until 1940, when he left to become a naval chaplain in WWII.

After leaving the Navy, in 1948, he became pastor of St. Margaret Mary again, where he served until his retirement in 1966.

Thank You for Your Media Coverage

Dear Editor: I have had the pleasure of working with Currents News’ Jessica Easthope on two amazing stories that she covered for our parish.

One was for our Autism Basketball Camp, and most recently for our Sensory Room, “Still Waters,” along with The Tablet’s writer Bill Miller. Both were a joy to work with on these projects. Ms. Easthope’s faith and enthusiasm are contagious.

She made the process easy and paid close attention to the necessary details to convey the heart and soul of the story. I am so grateful for this news outlet and the opportunity to evangelize about the good works we are able to do.

I was very impressed with your news service. The production was timely and the final product was impressive. The process was easy and efficient. I’m happy to know that there are Catholic news outlets of this caliber providing such great stories.

Father James A. Worth

Editor’s note: The writer is the pastor of St. Joseph Parish and an adjunct faculty member at Seton Hall University.

Knights of Columbus Drive

Dear Editor: I just wanted to say thank you for doing the article on the Knights of Columbus.

I think it came out great, and on the front page no less. I couldn’t be happier. The two included boxes on how and why to join was a very nice touch and we are still seeing men coming in from the weekend.

Overall, we think the membership drive weekend was a success and it had the intended impact. I believe this article was a big help and it still is.

I also want to thank Bill Miller for writing such a good article (Recruitment Drive Looks To Lift KofC, March 29)

He was a pleasure to work with and he was very thorough. I am receiving a lot of compliments, and that’s thanks to Bill.
