Sister Consuela Marie DeBiase, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 61 years, died at Maria Regina Residence Feb. 10.
She attended St. Brigid School, Bushwick, and St. Angela Hall Academy, Clinton Hill, before entering the congregation in 1955 from St. Brigid.
She studied at Brentwood College, and earned two master’s degrees, one in French from Middlebury College, Vt., and in Christian spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.
Formerly known as Sister Consuela Therese, she extensively researched her congregation’s origins in France prior to her teaching ministry in St. Martin of Tours, Bushwick, 1959-60; St. John of God, Central Islip, L.I., 1960-65; Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 1965-69, and Academy of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., 1969-82.
Her work in spiritual direction/retreats began in Bethel House of Prayer, Brentwood, 1982-87. She was keynote speaker for leadership meetings, formation teams and renewal programs. She worked on the staff in Mercy Center in Madison, Conn., where she gave retreats, workshops, training programs, supervised spiritual directors and directed retreats.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
